Apocalyptic, But Make it Queer
Queer & trans stories in apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic worlds
First of a series only
Sister list to: Zombies, but make it Queer
As always, suggestions incredibly welcome!
☣
Note: Not specifically a list of good LGBTQ+ representation (though many of them absolutely are, and many are written by queer and/or trans authors!). But I haven't read all of them (yet), so this list doesn't inherently imply my recommendation, as such

But WAIT. There’s hope. ✨FICTION✨
Straight from the Solarpunk Manifesto, “We are solarpunks because the only other options are denial or despair.”
What if there’s more to our future? What if we were optimistic?
Below are the fiction books that have made it to O.E. Tearmann’s Open List of Positive and Hopeful Futures
I’ll make another list for the nonfiction and for the anthologies. Feel free to suggest any recs!
Not Only Orwell - Dystopias written by women
Everyone knows George Orwell or Aldous Huxley. Their works are considered to be the staples of dystopia stories.
But are they?
Most of the people know Octavia E. Butler or Margaret Atwood. They showed the feminine side of dystopia. But this subgenre of science fiction have much more to offer.
Yes, you find here all the famous ladies too but I'll do my best to find even more. So I hope the fellow Boundlings will help too💗
We’re All Gonna Die
Apocalyptic and/or post apocalyptic books
I'm At A Very Medical Time In My Life... 🩺
Fiction (and some non-fiction) across genres featuring plagues, poisons, palace physicians, healers, and pre-antibiotic chaos. If it involves herbs, plagues, questionable remedies, court intrigue, or a morally complex healer experimenting in the corner, I want it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it…
Pre-, early and post- apocalyptic dystopias
Adult Dystopian
Dystopian classics and contemporary books for adults
Apocalypse for the Girls, Gays, and Theys
Stories of survival and the end of the world from the POV of queer folks and women.*
*note, if there’s a cis-man POV in one of the listed books, there will also be a non-cis male main character as well
💬OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS. Just comment and I will add.
Dystopian/Speculative Fiction by Women
Apocalyptic Reads
books that centre around the apocalypse or the potential for an event to become apocalyptic. may include some dystopian books, zombie stories, climate fiction, pandemic narratives, and natural disasters. the story may centre on a single place rather than the entire world. not all of these were perfect reads but they were still interesting. contains only books i've read
Gender Plagues
Oh no! All the men turned into zombies! Or all the women fell into an eternal slumber! Or other similar sex & gender-based afflictions!
These stories range from feminist to sexist and from trans-inclusive to TERFy; reader beware. Inclusion on the list is not an endorsement.
More Capable Than She Thought
A lot of books with a FMC experience self-doubt, but I want to highlight some of the best arcs and most touching moments. She's much more capable than she thought she was.
