Shallow River

My faith in HD Carlton is fully restored.

Before you even think about reading this book, I implore you to read the trigger warnings. I found this much more difficult to digest than the Cat and Mouse duet so please make sure you read the warnings before starting this.

River was such a fantastically written character with so much depth, it was hard not to empathise with her throughout the story. Seeing the way Ryan broke her down felt reminiscent to me of previous relationships and made me feel seen. Her character development is flawless and raw and I loved it.

The storyline itself was hard to read most of the time, but the way things tied together were so simple, yet smart but still had the twists and turns I expect in a thriller.

Not to spoil, but the ending of this was so incredibly satisfying, I’m still thinking about it now. And who knew I had a knife kink… not me..

I'm unsure about my feelings towards this book. The initial half was quite challenging to read due to the depiction of domestic violence and the difficulties victims face when trying to escape. Mako's treatment of River filled me with hope, and their ending was truly flawless. He played a crucial role in helping her rebuild her life and regain her happiness, which was absolutely perfect.

Another fantastic book from Carlton. I never seem to find any faults with her writing, it keeps me intrigued and even through a slower burn I never anticipate the ending.

Shallow River was a much slower burn then HA but I thoroughly enjoyed it regardless! It's sitting 2nd place on my list of Carlton books.

Loved the FMC, she was strong and empowering. Please please check the trigger warnings before venturing in. I always go in blind as I don't have any triggers but I know some do!
