I expected something different from McGlue, but I wasn’t disappointed. It’s beautifully written, wonderfully immersive, and at times, downright disgusting. Manages to make you feel just as trapped as the protagonist is. Ottessa Moshfegh handles dark and difficult themes with a delicate yet powerful touch. Alcoholism, family trauma & relationships, identity, & even class issues. The use of stream of consciousness and fragmented narration do mirror the character’s broken psyche. This style, however -though fitting- made certain moments feel a bit hard to follow. It’s a short read, so the disorientation is manageable, but it didn’t fully grip me the way I hoped.
