Thank you so much to Imprint and Edelweiss+ for providing me an e-arc copy of this! All thoughts and opinions are still my own.
I have such conflicting thoughts about this book.. So I'm going to break this into a pros and cons list. Because who doesn't love a good list.
Pros
1. The atmosphere of this entire book is top tier. K Ancrum wove an uneasy tension throughout this entire story, even when nothing dark was happening. I felt uncomfortable and uneasy through the whole thing. The vibe was fantastic and probably my favorite part of the book. I just love when a book can extract such a visceral reaction.
2. I love the exploration and discussions of family. I won't go into much detail (because spoilers) but this book really hits on what it means to be family and how many different ways that can manifest. As well as what it means when those relationships turn toxic.
3. This book is casually and unapologetically queer! And I'm always here for a flirtatious Ace ❤️
Cons
1. This book requires a suspension of belief that I just wasn't capable of...
2. But most of all, I didn't jive with the writing style.. I've only read 1 other K Ancrum book (The Wicker King) and I don't remember if I had a similar experience with that one. But something about the writing felt very stinted. This premise is whimsical and dark but the structure and style didn't match that in my opinion. And this kept me from ever really becoming invested in the characters (which is hard for me since I'm a character driven reader).
3. Okay no spoilers, but I didn't like the twist... It felt SO convenient how everything came together. And in general I just felt very icky in the end.
This rating feels really harsh because this book wasn't bad by any stretch! In fact I think I'm going to be the super unpopular opinion here. But unfortunately I just didn't have a great time reading this and was left with very lukewarm feelings in the end.
Definitely pick this up if you've loved K Ancrum in the past OR if you love dark, ominous stories with wild endings and amazing representation.
