One fateful encounter upends the lives of two women in this tense domestic thriller, a modern spin on Alfred Hitchcock’s  Strangers On A Train  that flips the script on race and gender politics.   “I’m a big believer that women should help each other, Tasha,” she says. “Don’t you think?” Tasha Jenkins has finally found the courage to leave her abusive husband. Taking her teenage son with her, Tasha checks into a hotel the night before their flight out of D.C. and out of Kordell Jenkins’s life forever. But escaping isn’t so easy, and Tasha soon finds herself driving back to her own personal hell. As she is leaving, a white woman pounds on her car window, begging to be let in. Behind the woman, an angry man is in pursuit. Tasha makes a split-second decision that will alter the course of her she lets her in and takes off.    Tasha and Madison Gingell may have very different everyday realities, but what they have in common is marriages they need out of. The two women want to help each other, but they have very different ideas of what that means . . .   They are on a collision course that will end in the case files of the D.C. MPD homicide unit. Unraveling the truth of what really happened may be impossible‒and futile. Because what has the truth ever done for women like Tasha and Madison?

This thriller is probably the best I’ve read in a while!

We begin with Tasha Jenkins, a black woman who’s running from the husband who abuses her. When a white woman jumps in front of her car, her life is forever changed. We are introduced to Madison Gingell, a master manipulator who wants her husband dead strikes up the idea of a mutual murder pact. And so follows the tale of these two woman’s fate, forever changed.

This novel had me on my toes thinking what is going to happen next? It’s not often that I’m able to not only stay sucked into the novel but also have no idea what path the story is taking! This novel works from end to beginning in a way with flashbacks in between that keep for an engaging mystery and a fresh way to learn facts about the mystery and seeing who the real victims and killers are.

The use of the subtle manipulation that some white people use with minorities to force their hands under the guise of allyship was phenomenal. Did that sentence make sense? Here let me explain! I received an advance readers copy so this quote may not appear in the final form but really showed how Madison thought her behaviors were justified in a sick twisted way

“…One of the ‘Top 10 Steps of Becomjng a Good Ally’ is to not make it about you and be willing to make sacrifices to help implement change”

Obviously Madison is also just batsht crazy so no amount of justification will help her.

This story also focuses on generational trauma and learned behavior especially those of kids in domestic abuse situations. Fascinating work done with the reflections of his father found within Gaelen. It helped show that even though the perceived threat has passed, others learn and continue on with the violence. A vicious circle.

What a great novel and I did not see that ending coming! Which is crazy cause I usually can somewhat predict it but this was such a fun and enjoyable novel.

Tasha Jenkins did something most people would not do. She allowed a stranger that was banging on her car, to enter her car. Her life would change forever after this.

So, I think this was an okay book. I really didn’t care for Tasha. Her character seemed off..it’s hard to explain, but she rubbed me the wrong way. On the other hand, I definitely didn’t care for Madison. Madison was a horrible human being. The book started off strong, and I was very much invested. However, towards the middle it fell flat for me. I really started to lose interest. It’s crazy because a big moment happened, and I still lost interest. I wish there was more action and less story telling in this. It did not give me the thrills that I would expect while reading a thriller. The ending did surprise me, and I do like that it was something I never expected.

I was confused on why some people considered this a political thriller, and I guess it’s because it involves a black woman and a white woman. White privilege definitely plays some role in this novel. However, I still expected better. It’s not a bad book, so if you really want to give it a chance, go for it.

The ending felt kind of rushed. Didn’t really know where it was going, and then it only felt half satisfying.
