He’s the only cowboy she’s ever wanted—could this be the summer to win his heart? Frankie Davis has been in love with Walker Cole for years. She supported him through the loss of his wife, and cared for his two sons as if they are her own. Knowing he only sees her as a friend is slowly killing her. But when she finds herself unexpectedly homeless for the summer, Walker is the only person she can turn to… Walker has fought hard to keep his attraction for Frankie under wraps. She’s young and full of optimism—everything Walker isn’t. She deserves so much more than a single dad cowboy with a forever-damaged heart. But having her living with him for the summer is pure, sensual torture! And when Frankie drops her own bombshell—she wants him as fiercely as he craves her—Walker must stay living in the past, or risk everything for a second chance at happiness…

There were things about the way Walker and Frankie know each other and their roles in each other’s lives that didn’t sit well with me. Yet, there are things the author included that helped even the scales. For instance, not only was the age gap acknowledged but so was the potential power dynamic. Then another side to the coin was shown. But this short story still ended up feeling stilted to me. The flow worked beautifully at times, and not so much at others. There are many novellas I have read by this author so I know it’s not the short page count that was the problem. This story just didn’t fully work. It was close, but just not all the way there.
That being said, I need to mention the editing issues I had with this book because they very well could have played into how the flow didn’t always work for me. There were many instances of words being left out of sentences (example: “Had not kids yet.” That was the full sentence.) or words being repeated in sentences. There was even an time or two where the words were swapped around in the wrong order. I can see that happening when you’re typing/writing away in the moment of the story. But they are things that should be caught in editing. It was disappointing from this author and this publishing team that it happened so many times in such a short story.
