I absolutely love her books as Debra's Castaneda writing creates beautiful and eerie atmospheres that draw you in as the stories play out like a movie.
The fourth book in Castaneda's DARK EARTH RISING standalone series, Circus at Devil's Landing is the origin story of monster that reside in Roy’s Slough. The book begins in 1906 Mexico with Ana Maria seeking to free her captured lover from a vile ringmaster. Eventually joining the travelling circus to only discover more secrets are hidden in the depths of the ship. The secrets begin to spill out as a storm brings them to California's Central Coast. I loved all the various carnies that appear in the book. Ana Marie is a strong female protagonist whose pain and suffering has not dampen her spirits to continue on to get what she wants.
Circus at Devil's Landing is more of a gothic horror novel with romance and dark fantasy. I recommend this for fans of The Hacienda and Mexican Gothic. This is my third book by Castaneda and I know from now on she will be an instant buy for me!
I was gifted this ARC in a contest hosted by the author herself.
