Raising Kane (Rough Riders, #9)

Lorelei James

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

She surrendered the reins. Now he’s raising the stakes. When attorney Ginger Paulson slips head-over-high-heels down a flight of stairs, she has no one to care for her young son…until lethally sexy Kane McKay shows up, determined to prove his cowboy chivalry. Past experience has inoculated her against take-charge men, but even Ginger isn’t immune to Kane’s Built Ford Tough body. For two years rancher Kane McKay has followed the Little Buddies mentoring program’s cardinal rule—hands off his Little Buddy Hayden’s mama. But one look at Ginger’s bruised body and Kane is through watching the stubborn woman take care of everyone but herself. The feisty, curvy redhead needs his help and he’ll give her the hands-on type whether she likes it or not. Now Kane’s throwing out the doctor’s orders and issuing his own demands—her full sexual submission. Can the former hell-raiser convince the gun-shy single mom to look beyond his past…toward a shared future?

I'm always a bit disappointed with Lorelei James. She has a large following but her writing style just doesn't hit the spot for me no matter how good her premises and characters are.

This is one of those example. I loved the characters. I loved the premise, conflicts and details of the plot. I especially like the inclusion of the "little buddies" program. There was so much good here. So so so much good. And yet, it just didn't hit the spot. I didn't eat it up, and I couldn't get sucked into the story. I just can't get into Lorelei James, and it's not for lack of trying.

Obviously, I have a bias rating based on the fact that I can't get into this book. But understand that this is nothing new, it always seems to be the case with this series. But what doesn't work for me might work for you so if the blurb sounds good to you give the book a try. It's a really dense plot involving a lot of different issues. You might find a love for the book and Lorelei James that is so far out of reach for me.

That all being said ... I started book 10 last night. How does that sort of thing happen? Well, in this case it was that we see Brandt and Jessie in this book and I was curious to see how they would end up together. I'll probably also read book 11 because "♥ Sam ♥ ~S2~They call me, Slam Bam" recommended it, and I don't take such a recommendation lightly.

So at the end of the day, I'm not hugely satisfied by the books I read in this series ... but that doesn't seem to stop me from coming back to try again.

    4.5 stars

If you’re interested in this book, chances are you have read other books in this series. That means you already know Kane and, to a lesser extent, Ginger. That may also mean that Kane is not your favorite person…yet. Just as Colt turned his life around before and during Branded as Trouble, Kane has stopped his wild ways. He’s just waiting for his family to see him as someone other than the wild, sex crazed guy he was before.

Not only did the story have tons of heat, as I’ve come to expect from this series; this story also had tons of heart. To watch Kane work through his insecurities and the natural way he reacted to Ginger’s son Hayden was so touching. I hurt for him and cheered for him throughout this whole book. Although his family still messed with him about his past exploits, they also believed in him and didn’t like when he underestimated himself.

Ginger is like Superwoman. She’s a successful lawyer, a single mom, and cares for her dad who is in a wheelchair. She’s used to doing everything for herself and by herself and never asks for help. Ginger is also one of the nicest and most compassionate people in town. Falling and hurting herself is probably the best thing to happen to her since it forced her to accept help. Since that help came in the form of Kane McKay, it also forced Ginger and Kane to face their chemistry.
