From the acclaimed author of Afterlove comes a beautiful sapphic second-chance love story drenched with longing, loss and mystery. Mara's ex, Nico, is the girl of her dreams: beautiful, wild and unpredictable. She's Mara's everything, even though Mara's never sure that she's Nico's anything. Then Nico goes missing ... New Year's Day: A girl is rescued from the sea. She knows she is called Nico, but other than that, she has no memory of why she was in the sea or what came before. When destiny reunites them, is this Mara and Nico's second chance? Can their relationship make it out of the shallows? And what will happen when they discover the truth behind Nico's accident? Because one day, Nico will remember everything.

mara’s ex, nico, is the girl of her dreams…but she’s not so sure nico feels the same. but then nico goes missing…and when she finally reappears, all she remembers is her name. mara takes this as an opportunity to have a second chance with nico, but what will happen when nico does eventually regain her memories?

i enjoyed reading afterlove earlier this year, so i was excited for this book! this was less romantic, and i would classify it as a contemporary novel rather than a romance, but i still enjoyed it. i appreciated the discussions surrounding breaking cycles. i personally think the mental illness aspect was handled well, but mine is just one opinion of many, so be mindful of this when going in.

The last 70ish pages of this book is where anything actually starts to happen. And even then is super unfortunate how everything plays out.

The beginning of this story was super slow and frustrating to get through. Which surprised me because the writing is really good. I wanted to stop reading at so many points while reading because I couldn’t understand why all this filler was needed. It honestly felt like 200+ pages of straight filler. None of it was conducive to the lack of a plot line at all.
