Pen is far too annoying a heroine to get the third star that this goofy regency romp would otherwise earn from me. The maturity difference between the childish Pen and the dandy-but-not-TOO-dandy (come on, Heyer) Wyndham is too stark to be appealing or romantic - it just feels icky. And, petty complaint though this may be, it bothered me that we’re supposed to read Cedric’s dismissal toward [SPOILER] as callous and therefore indicative of his bad character, while the same complete lack of reaction to the same event is somehow intended to be...what, charmingly naive? A sign that she’s not sentimental (in contrast to the poor, misused Lydia)? Not Like Other Girls? in Pen. Oh, Pen, you idiotic brat. If you’re not old enough to realize that your situation is obviously compromising, you’re not old enough to marry your Corinthian.
