Bleak and broken, BLACKBIRDS is a different brand of darkness than the average UF. Miriam Black is pain wrapped in swagger, and the supernatural core of her life is no gift. As despairing as she may feel, I couldn't help but root for her through the violence and intrigue, hoping against hope she'll wrest control of we destiny.

BLACKBIRDS is as cinematic and violent as a Tarantino movie, with Miriam by parts strong yet breakable. Her self destructive drive drew me in, both because I was eager to find the root cause and hopeful that she'd rise above. Still, BLACKBIRDS is more horror than action, and there were times when all the explicit violence and profanity wore thin. By the time i read about Ben Hodges's death the story was oppressively, unrelentingly black. Miriam seems more the victim of her story than heroine, and her pain just chokes the story down nothing. But I kept reading. Woof, this shit is dark.
