This list is a community project, I asked in the club and received multiple suggestions which I then added onto a list: fiction and nonfiction, fantasy, contemporary, sci-fi, the main theme is just hope. Some people said their recommendation might not fit very well but I added it anyways.

Also, in the og post, I mentioned The Good Place and if people have recommendations tending to that, so some books are related to that.

Books that inspired or are similar to Studio Ghibli films

Before they became beloved films, they were stories on the page. Here are the books that inspired the Studio Ghibli movies! Some are direct adaptations and others were used as inspiration. Note: not all of them have been translated to English (yet).

I learned wayyyyy too late in my life that most of the Ghibli movies were derived from books. Some we know about, like Howl's Moving Castle, some we don't, like I didn't know Kiki's Delivery Service was a novel originally! So I've decided to make a list for the Ghibli enjoyers who want to take a look at where these wonderful movies sprout from 😁

My favorite Japanese literature translated into English. I use the term literature very broadly here--it's not genre specific. This list includes some manga; I've only listed the first volume for each series.

I've got lots more Japanese lit on my TBR, so I'll continue to update as I find new favorites that I'd like to recommend. ✌️😁
