Recs if you like The Ruin of Kings...

I've noticed most fantasy lists are saturated with YA and romantasy books, but some of us crave adult high-stakes adventures. If you enjoy epic stakes, deep characters, and majestic world-building (without the distraction of romance) this list is for you. For series, I've only added the first book. 📖

I'm sure some of these are already on your TBR, so might as well add some more! Let me know if I am missing any of your favorites!

Stories featuring queer, polyam main characters! Mostly adult books, but contains some YA as well. Although the book doesn't have to have a heavy romantic focus, the polyam rep must be in the MCs, not in side characters. 🫶 (Note: some books in this list are series starters that don't contain polyamory until after the first book!)

*SFF novels which use footnotes as a secondary narrative, paratext, or metacommentary on events in the main narrative.

f*ck misogyny, women write epic fantasy too

It’s me. I’m bitches ✋🏻

Collection of fiction texts that utilize footnotes for various reasons, including world building, comedic narrative input, or character perspective

no dude bro fantasy books on this list

Lately I’ve been craving that old school fantasy, but much more diverse than what you’d generally think of when you think of old school fantasy. So this list will be queer epic/high fantasy full of high stakes adventure and perhaps magic, but specifically that has the VIBES. vibes are essential.

As a note I haven’t read all of these books yet but I am making my way through them, and if any of them are not the match I think they are I’ll remove them (or feel free to comment to let me know!)

A compendium of books featuring dragons

books with bisexual characters (even if they end up with the opposite sex THEY'RE STILL BI)

I went through all the books in the romance quest tab and here are all the ones where at least one of leads is in a relationship that is not "man and woman falling in love with each other." F/F, M/M, F/NBi, M/NBi, NBi/NBi, etc. Largely motivated by wanting to figure out which romance book quests I had a chance of getting the badges for. If I missed any, let me know. Quest specific info in the pinned comment.

Epic fantasy where battles, survival, and legacy drive the story. Love may exist in the background, but here it’s war, quests, and struggles that take center stage.

Queer genre fiction set in a world different from our reality, whether set in a different time, a different world, or in a version of our world but with different rules. Perfect for the reader looking for a little escapism in their next queer read 📚✨

Books of the polyamorous sort. Haven't read all of them so I could be wrong on some. Some of these are set in non-monogamous cultures even if the protagonists themselves are not engaging in romance or polyamory.

Big thanks to AthenatheStorier who often finds and recommends these books through instagram or tiktok videos!

Also if you're a lover of polyamorous stories of any kind/medium, let me know. I want to co-write a collaborative analysis of polyamorous stories and you could help!

For my fellow asexual community. Go forth and conquer, er, read. 💜🖤🩶🤍 Books featuring canonically asexual main characters and perspectives from demi, gray, sex positive, sex neutral, to sex repulsed. Includes nonfiction recs as well.

A list for people who don't want to be left waiting for the next book release.

• Includes: First books in completed series, standalones, interconnected standalones*

• Subgenres: Fantasy-first books with a romance subplot - some of these romances are very slow burn or don't appear till later in the series

Books where MMC are good guys, show emotions, etc. Golden Retriever vibes. Suggestions welcome.

Epic medieval fantasy worlds you can get lost in (but you probably wouldn't, because there is a map)!
