This book should be called 'Masochism 101'. That is to say, as a wannabe overachiever, I enjoyed the crap out of it. Was it ridiculous the lengths he went to just to prove something to himself? Yes. Pretty much. I would not advise anyone to try running on broken legs no matter how much of a 'bad mother f####er" it made them feel like afterwards. But is his message of endurance, discipline, and momentum the most encouraging sh** I've ever read in my life? Absolutely.

This book made me dig out my old skipping rope and go at it past the point where there are blisters forming on my toes and I'm staggering around like a drunk antelope afterwards. Recalling his stories and attitude somehow made me enjoy that pain and eager for more the next day. Tasks that I normally put off or do half heartedly are now the things I go into with full thrust. It's crazy. It really is. I've probably been more productive, and pumped about it, than I've been this entire year.

However, to me at least, he never comes off as boastful. His book is not about proving how great he is, it's about proving how great WE can be.

He acknowledges towards the end the damage he was actually doing to himself by being too proud to follow the advice of experts when it came to preparing himself for the physical challenges that he dove into. It leaves us with an understanding that we need more than just a calloused mind and the ability to push past our 40% capacity. We need good preparation and a large dose of humility.

If you feel like you're stagnant in life, especially due to the whole pandemic thing, I recommend reading this book and following his exercises at the end of each chapter. It's tough love, but sometimes that's exactly what you need to escape the rut.
