Here's every book so far from BOTM's monthly shortlist since February 2015 for anyone who wants to read them all like I do!

Scifi/Fantasy/Speculative fiction featuring women in STEM* careers (*the M can stand for magic if the worldbuilding presents magic like a STEM field)

They really were everyone’s last choice.

Currently taking recs for this list!

This is for the classics, the old and new, the lesser known books, the short stories and the translated speculative fiction. Sci-fi could be argued to be one of the best and most expansive genres out there - it’s just a matter of finding the right book for you.

If there is a series, I will only be putting the first book unless they are unrelated.

This list is full of women who solve problems, break rules, run experiments, ask inconvenient questions, and generally refuse to stay in the lanes they were assigned. Fiction and non-fiction, from romance to history. Welcome to the nerdy, brilliant chaos.

"an imagined world or society in which there is great suffering or injustice, typically one that is totalitarian or post-apocalyptic. many of the people lead dehumanized and fearful lives"

dystopian: relating to or denoting an imagined state or society where there is great suffering or injustice.

books about space and other planets

In honor of the Artemis II launch on 1 April 2026, here are some more books about space travel.

Fiction books about women who are smart, capable and really into science.

A list of all the books featured as monthly picks for the Illumicrate Sub. ◽️ Not Including sequels or special editions outside of the monthly sub.◽️ I will include new books about a month after release to avoid spoilers.

A lot of sci-fi books are heavy on the fiction and light on the science but these are books that passed my vibe check as a scientist. If you have any more to add I'm always looking for suggestions!

or books set (ambiguously or not) in space

I love science fiction but it can be hard to find books that aren't a part of a huge, galaxy-spanning series so here's a collection of standalone books!

The most comprehensive list of award winning sci-fi and fantasy novels. The books on this list have won either 1 or multiple awards out of the Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy, Locus Sci-Fi, Locus Fantasy, goodreads Choice Fantasy, or goodreads Science Fiction Awards.

Books with (primarily) black covers!

Name generators my beloveds. Just a list made by someone whose D&D characters were mostly christened with the help of RNG. The one and only criterion: Title is a first/given name (or nickname too)! Some are verified by the book actually containing a character with that name.

Come for the futuristic, gritty city vibes, stay for the outcasts fighting corrupt systems.

This list includes a range range of cyberpunk and urban fantasy books not always featured in classic lists. Cyberpunk sci-fi often features high tech science-based futures, action and adventure, and outcasts fighting against systems. Urban fantasy has a similar feel, but uses fantasy elements like magic. Come enjoy some near-futuristic worlds bursting with creativity and scrappy characters.

Thanks to Artemis, the world is once again looking to the stars. Here are some fictional books set in space, and some non-fiction documenting the amazing reality
