The gods love to toy with us mere mortals. And every hundred years, we let them… I have never been favored by the gods. Far from it, thanks to Zeus. Living as a cursed office clerk for the Order of Thieves, I just keep my head down and hope the capricious beings who rule from Olympus won’t notice me. Not an easy feat, given San Francisco is Zeus’ patron city, but I make do. I survive. Until the night I tangle with a different god. The worst god. Hades. For the first time ever, the ruthless, mercurial King of the Underworld has entered the Crucible—the deadly contest the gods hold to determine a new ruler to sit on the throne of Olympus. But instead of fighting their own battles, the gods name mortals to compete in their stead. So why in the Underworld did Hades choose me—a sarcastic nobody with a curse on her shoulders—as his champion? And why does my heart trip every time he says I’m his? I don’t know if I’m a pawn, bait, or something else entirely to this dangerously tempting god. How can I, when he has more secrets than stars in the sky? Because Hades is playing by his own rules…and Death will win at any cost.
The slow burn between Lyra and Hades is driving me crazy. 🔥🤣
I’m loving this book. I’m listening to the audiobook and I really like the narrator. It’s reading more like a YA or New Adult book but it seems like there might be some Hades slow burn 🔥🔥🔥

The Hunger Games with a Greek mythology twist. I loved this book. It was well paced and had a lot of action scenes. Some minor romance as well. I think there could have almost been more in the beginning of the story. For a 600 page book there isn’t much substance before you get to the Labors. Though I didn’t mind the length of the book with all the Labors because it was giving a labor for each of the gods and ties the story together well since they’re in the Crucible. But then it was so long and detailed the ending sort of felt rushed. It took so long to get there and then it was over so quickly. I love Hades as a Character. But had a hard time connecting with Lyra. Her character was a bit bland and I know she is young but I would have liked her to be more emotionally mature for the story. I’m not sure why she had to be 23 when the Gods are ancient and other Champions seemed to be of varying ages. The romance is basically lacking. There is one spicy scene which was good but for the “slow burn” implied by the entire book I expected more then a few plain kissing scenes and definitely wouldn’t call this a Romantasy considering the lack of general romance. I know it’s petty but I really disliked the names for each chapter they were so basic or cliche without any thought just essentially giving away what was happening in the chapter. It just felt immature maybe, normally I don’t mind it but this just seemed unnecessary. Super fun read for me though and looking forward to the next book!
