Much of the post/apoc genre is taken up by US-centric fiction, giving a very specific mindset & often a similar type of apocalypse. There's a strong focus on guns & military. Settings outside the US can provide us with unusual, diverse & interesting stories of survival

If you ask someone what apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic fiction they've read, there's a fair chance much of that list will have been written by cis men, because they're the books that get the most promotion in the genre.

I discovered Angela Carter in Novemver of 2024 and after absolutely falling head over heels for one of her short stories in a Literary Critisism class - Company of Wolves - vowed to read as many of her books as I could in 2025. With college work I only read 3 in 2025, and now we are coming into 2026 and I have compiled several of her books, but have yet to read them! This is my personal quest list to encourage me to.
