Fresh, funny and heartfelt, The Expectant Detectives is a charming debut mystery about a group of soon-to-be moms-turned-detectives. “A darkly witty debut. Archly funny and highly recommended!”—Deanna Raybourn Can they solve the mother of all murders? For Alice and her partner Joe, moving to the sleepy village of Penton is a chance to embrace country life and prepare for the birth of their first child. He can take up woodwork; maybe she’ll learn to make jam? But the rural idyll they’d hoped for doesn’t quite pan out when a dead body is discovered at their local prenatal class, and they find themselves suspects in a murder investigation. With a cloud of suspicion hanging over the heads of the whole group, Alice and her new-found pregnant friends set out to solve the mystery and clear their names, with the help of her troublesome dog, Helen. However, there are more secrets and tensions in the heart of Penton than first meet the eye. Between the discovery of a shady commune up in the woods, the unearthing of a mysterious death years earlier, and the near-tragic poisoning of Helen, Alice is soon in way over her head.

I really enjoyed reading this book! There were parts of it that kind of annoyed me, but overall, it was a fun reading experience. It reminded me a lot of the Finlay Donovan series because it was a scatterbrained mom getting in way over her head in a murder investigation. So if you enjoyed that series, you’ll probably like this book.

I was totally intrigued by the whole concept of the book. A group of pregnant women on a mission to solve a murder that happened during their prenatal class? Sign me up!

There were so many quirky things thrown in that I thought gave the book a lot of character. The main character, Alice, and her boyfriend move to a small country town in England. While making friends, she finds that this town is a lot more “hippy” than she’s used to. Little does she know, it is actually home to a whole hippy commune! All the hippy things, such as gong baths, birthing ceremonies, herbal dispensaries, and goddess temples intrigue Alice as she is swept up in the investigation.

The only thing that really bothered me about the book was Alice’s character. She was meddlesome, awkward, and didn’t seem to have any social understanding. Her friends constantly told her to leave her dog at home, yet she would bring him everywhere. She brought him to her friend’s immaculate home, which she messed up, the police station, and to the hippy commune - even when expressly told not to. This just really rubbed me the wrong way. She was also 39 weeks pregnant and seemed to give little thought to the safety of her unborn baby while running around chasing a murderer. She just came off as selfish and unaware to me.

However, the story was super entertaining and I was sucked into the mystery. Was it enough to overlook the annoying main character? Maybe. Overall, I give it three and a half stars for keeping me interested!
