Recs if you like Year of Wonders...

Going back to the Dark Ages with all the horror and death they experienced. A comprehensive list including popular selections along with lesser known works to evoke the Olde Age scares.

(I try to update this list all any time I run across new ones!)

For a book to make this list, it needs to start with X, Y, or Z (ignoring "The," "A," "An"), be a standalone or series opener, and have at least a 3.7 star average rating on Pagebound. Pulling from a variety of genres!

Much of the post/apoc genre is taken up by US-centric fiction, giving a very specific mindset & often a similar type of apocalypse. There's a strong focus on guns & military. Settings outside the US can provide us with unusual, diverse & interesting stories of survival

Fiction with witches — their stories , origins or their general rise to power. I intended the mood to be quite a bit darker when making this list, and will pull from mostly elaborate fantastical worlds — morally obscure, villainous, heroic and everything in between.

If you ask someone what apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic fiction they've read, there's a fair chance much of that list will have been written by cis men, because they're the books that get the most promotion in the genre.
