The Children of Red Peak - An unsettling psychological journey of freedom after escaping a religious cult.

David, his sister, Angela, Deacon, and Beth live with a dark secret after escaping a religious cult’s horrific end during their childhood. Years later, the trauma of what they endured on that fateful night looms over them like a dark shadow.

Unfortunately, what brings them all together again is the loss of a fellow survivor who took her own life. After stories are shared, the pained group goes their separate ways again, only to be brought back together after long-repressed memories surface. The urge to return to Red Peak in search of answers becomes overwhelming, but truth comes at a price.

Before The Children of Red Peak, I can’t recall reading any cult-related books, so this is my introduction to the world of cult horror stories. I was intrigued by the plot, especially during the 2005 timeline when the main characters and their families were a part of this cult. The storyline grabbed my attention, and I was reading through those parts quickly. I found myself wanting to stay in that timeline. When the storyline followed the present day, I had difficulty paying attention. I wasn’t thrilled with any of the characters and the lives they were living, and I couldn’t focus on the story, my mind was going elsewhere.

As a horror story, I was drawn to the dark, twisted, and intense parts, particularly the end. Although predictable in a sense, it was still shocking, and I enjoyed how it played out.

Overall, I don't know how I feel about this one, it didn’t hold my attention. I’m going to give Craig DiLouie another chance!
