The Lucky List

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Emily and her mum were always lucky. But Emily’s mum’s luck ran out three years ago when she succumbed to cancer, and nothing has felt right since. Now, the summer before her senior year, things are worse than ever – Emily has wrecked things with her boyfriend, Matt, and her dad is selling the house she grew up in and giving her mum’s belongings away. The only person she has to talk to is Blake, a girl she barely knows since she and her dad moved back to town five seconds ago. But that’s when Emily finds the list – her mum’s senior year summer bucket list – buried in the back of her closet. When Blake suggests that Emily take it on as a challenge, the two set off on a journey to tick each box and help Emily face her fears over losing her connection to her mum. As she starts to feel closer to her mother, so too does Emily’s bond with Blake deepen into something she wasn't expecting. And suddenly Emily must face another fear: accepting the secret part of herself she never got a chance to share with the person who knew her best.

Okay 1st Matt deserved SO much better than how he got treated. 2nd this was so predictable it hurt and Emily is not a great friend BUT this book made me ugly sob so hard. I could relate to a lot in this book, having lost a parent myself I could relate to the pain of not knowing if your current path in life is something they would approve of. Bucket lists or in this case a lucky list is one of my favorite tropes especially if they got the list from a parent!

overall its a very very sweet romance that I would recommend to anyone who has gone through grief of a parent. (Would advise to check some triggers first so you don't sob like a baby like I did lol)

This was a beautiful coming of age story, dealing with loss & finding yourself in the process of healing. I empathized with the main character as the loss of her mother overshadowed any revelations she had about herself are she was becoming an young adult. The joy she rediscovered and the love that bloomed was so touching to read about. Sometimes life doesn't turn out how others think it is "supposed" to but how it was meant to.
