Peppermint draws from Amber Isaac’s tumultuous adolescence, watching Gregg Araki movies as a teenager in rural Missouri, and her current life in Texas. The poems in Peppermint track Amber Isaac’s survival, both mentally and physically, in hostile areas, and her eventual coming-out as a trans femme. These poems deal in direct language and brutal honesty with themes of self-harm, love and loss, and what it means to be transgender in the Eighties, Nineties, and the Twenties.
