DNFed at page 60. I know this is a super unpopular opinion but I’m so bored and don’t want to keep reading. This is my second attempt at reading this one and while I got a bit further this time, I won’t be giving it another shot.
I liked this book, but I really didn't love it.
I loved the bits that weren't overly descriptive flying/plane/pilot descriptions - I just found those really difficult to trudge through and I can't say that I enjoyed reading them, to be honest. But I really did enjoy the other sections of the novel, and if it was just solely based around that, I'd have loved it more. I'm disappointed with this one because it wasn't what I expected - I expected a dramatic, intense story and I got a description of planes/flying with sections of dramatic intensity. Ahh, well!
I love the characters in this book more than my life, and the ending of this book ruined me.
A very touching story of friendship, bravery, and love.
One of the most heart breaking and compelling YA books I've read and certainly my favorite historical YA to date. The story follows the friendship during WWII of two young women, Maddie Brodatt and Julia Beaufort-Stuart. Coming from radically different backgrounds and playing different roles (Maddie is a pilot and Julie is a spy) they nonetheless become best friends. Stranded in Occupied France after a crash landing, the story is revealed in notes Julie writes while being interrogated by the Gestapo and operation notes written by Maddie. I am very familiar with the history behind the story but wasn't familiar with the RAF (British air force) operations and learning about the different planes was fascinating. But the friendship between Maddie and Julie really made this book for me. Amazing story of friendship and horrors of war that I would recommend to anyone! And as a side note, I loved that Julie was a Stuart! My mom's side of the family is Stuart and I grew up hearing from my grandfather about our relation to Mary Queen of Scots. :P

Spies! Best girl friends! Twisty plots and intrigue and bravery and GIRL SPIES. While I found Code Name Verity to be slow going at first, I was so delighted by the premise itself that I had to keep reading. Happily, once the setup is established and the plot really gets going, it’s thrilling and wonderful and you’re so wrapped up in Maddie and Queenie and their lives that you can’t help but love them fiercely. I know I do.
