The first book in the Shady Hollow series, in which we are introduced to the village of Shady Hollow, a place where woodland creatures live together in harmony--until a curmudgeonly toad turns up dead and the local reporter has to solve the case. Reporter Vera Vixen is a relative newcomer to Shady Hollow. The fox has a nose for news, so when she catches wind that the death might be a murder, she resolves to get to the bottom of the case, no matter where it leads. As she stirs up still waters, the fox exposes more than one mystery, and discovers that additional lives are in jeopardy. Vera finds more to this town than she ever suspected. It seems someone in the Hollow will do anything to keep her from solving the murder, and soon it will take all of Vera's cunning and quickness to crack the case. A VINTAGE CRIME/BLACK LIZARD ORIGINAL.

This was adorable though I can't deny I struggled in the start of this. I know anything marked as cozy isn't going to go over well with me, the stakes are just a bit to slow for my liking, but I really wanted to give this a try. So I'm not surprised I was falling asleep during the first 20%, though once the story picked up I found myself engrossed in the mystery.

Mystery isn't my go to when reading so I have nothing to really compare this too so it was fun and cute. The stakes were as low as I figured they would be, but still enticing enough to keep me glued, though I think I just liked the animal aspect mostly.

I appreciate not being able to figure out the culprit, it really helped keep me going. Although I will say I was a little disappointed with the outcome after the murder was found, it's not my favorite conclusion to happen when the murder is found. I hope it won't be a reoccurring method in later books which I do plan on reading.

The characters were cute, though I felt after awhile names where just being thrown at me, and they didn't do anything in the plot aside from being part of the investigation, which I suppose makes sense. The world feels small, but it was also interesting to learn that not all the animals in this world have gained human like societies, does make it a bit confusing overall if it's just an animal world or not. Don't know if this is ever going to be expanded on or not though.
