Roslyn Blackthorne is dead. Technically. I faked my death to get out of a loveless marriage but that was only half the battle. To ensure my vampire duke can never find me, I have to run far and fast enough he can’t catch me. Because if he does, it’s over. Not just my life—for real this time—but my entire family’s. So how does the princess of the Blackthorne vampires disappear in a world where every supernatural creature knows who she is? Summon a demon, of course. Pan agrees to keep me hidden, help me start a new life…for a cost. And it’s not my soul he’s after. Oh no, he wants my blood…and my body. But so do they. The shifter twins. The cursed hacker. And, of course, my estranged husband. Starting over should be easy after my bargain with the demon. New name. New job. New reality in a tiny town where no one would think to search. Welcome to Aurora Springs, Alaska, a sleepy place where everyone is hiding something and nothing ever happens. At least it was…until I arrived and people started dropping like flies. It looks like I brought my past, and a whole host of other problems, with me. But that’s not a big deal, right? It’s not the end of the world or anything. WARNING: The Mate Games: Pestilence is a spicy why choose series that is sure to set your…heart…on fire. If you’re not a fan of grumpy dukes with a penchant for pain, purple demons with fancy body parts, nosy hackers with boundary issues, angsty wolf shifters who like to share, sword crossing, and plenty of group activities, this one’s not for you. But if it is…welcome back to The Mate Games, we’ve been waiting for you.

This is a fantasy RH novel about a half-vampire on the run from her husband and his family. She runs to a small Alaskan town where everyone is a supernatural being. To hide herself more effectively, she makes a deal with a demon--her body for his help hiding her.
I enjoyed the beginning of this a lot. It set up cool, interesting characters who each had their own fairly-well developed independent story lines. Their interactions were clever and flirty and pretty interesting. There was decent sex almost immediately (in a way that actually made sense contextually, which is hard to do). There are a decent amount of plot lines introduced to add layers of mystery.
About 1/3 of the way in, it got boring. More characters were introduced, who all seemed distinct and interesting in their own way. But, as many RH books tend to, it got repetitive and resorted to "we have to protect her, it's all about her" etc, which can be fun if executed well. The banter became completely unreadable, to the point where no one could have a normal conversation, it was all just double entendres and sex jokes. The sex scenes were fine, but not very immersive.
Not sure I'm going to read the second one, which is a shame because we never really got to see any of the kind of sex scenes in this one that you literally read a RH for. There's zero DP, but they talk about it so much that it feels like a huge letdown that it never happens. She spends 1/2 the book just teasing us with it, and leaves it on a cliff hanger that felt completely unnecessary.
