Never ask a question unless you’re sure you want the truth. I’ve been listening to my father sing for my whole life. I carry him in my pocket on my mp3 player. It’s just that we’ve never met face to face. My mother would never tell me how I came to be, or why my rock star father and I have never met. I thought it was her only secret. I was wrong. When she dies, he finally appears. Suddenly I have a first class ticket into my father’s exclusive world. A world I don’t want any part of – not at this cost. Only three things keep me my a cappella singing group, a swoony blue-eyed boy named Jake, and the burning questions in my soul. There’s a secret shame that comes from being an unwanted child. It drags me down, and puts distance between me and the boy I love. My father is the only one alive who knows my history. I need the truth, even if it scares me.

I really enjoyed this book. The author managed to capture a vivid main character that I was able to feel connected to - something I always enjoy. At times Rachel, the MC, got frustrating, but not in a way that was unbelievable or just in sake of the plot.

I do wish for some things the author would have gone more in depth. There were some very promising sub-plots to the story that fell a bit short, in my opinion. The hole thing with Haze was problematic from the start and though it started out as very intersting, he only returns once in the novel and then the problem just vanishes. The same goes for Aurora. From the start it was very clear to me that she was a lesbian and I thought we would get to read more about Aurora coming to terms with this herself, but the only thing that we get, is a scene at the very end of the book where Aurora suddenly brings along a girlfriend instead of the expected boyfriend.

It wasn't bad, but I do think those things could have been stronger points, instead of what felt like rushed sub-plots.

I also felt as if Rachel's dad's, Frederick's, redemption arc wasn't good enough for the reader to truly forgive him for abandoning our main character for seventeen years. Not to forget about all the problematic scenes where Freddy just peases out and leaves his only daughter to figure it out herself. Or the fact that he made her stay in his house for an entire month without any form of entertainment, while he continued jamming with his band and inviting over druggies and women.

But all in all, I actually enjoyed reading The Accidentals. I very much wanted to know what was going to happen and I never got bored whilst reading this. The relationship between Rachel and Jake felt very real and cute. It was nice to not have to read about the classic bad boy for a change, but just about a nice, genuine guy.

Rachel's story was heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time and I truly encourage anyone to read this book.
