Scarred lips resting on polished tusks...horned eyebrows over electric orange eyes… He was breathtaking. Oliver Turner has been given one last chance to regain his rightful position by his father’s side, running the family corporation, but he can’t keep his eyes off his klah’eel bodyguard. Oliver wants the man with an intensity that both scares and shocks him, and he’s terrified of letting the desire pass him by after being so afraid for so long that he’d never desire a man again. But Oliver has spent his whole life chasing the love and approval of his father, and he can’t let that slip through his fingers when he’s so close. Captain Mal’ik can’t believe that the yearning, longing scent pouring from the beautiful human man he’s been assigned to protect is for him. Mal’ik has been a soldier for decades and bears the proof of it in his mangled face and metal arm. Surely the prissy, brilliant young man can’t want him of all people. And yet, the way Oliver Turner looks at Mal’ik makes him feel like he could be so much more than just the scarred tool of an empire. As Oliver and Mal’ik wrestle with their surprising and unfamiliar feelings, the tense political situation surrounding them explodes into chaos. They will both be forced to make choices they never thought they’d make. Is it even possible for them to choose each other? The Alien Bodyguard is a steamy M/M romance with an HEA ending, set directly after the events of The Alien Emissary. Reading Emissary isn’t required, but it is highly encouraged, as Bodyguard contains spoilers for Emissary and includes Emissary’s main characters.

I felt very much so thrown into this book and setting. There were potentially interesting politics and maneuvering happening but I felt that I never got enough explanation for me to care or understand. I literally did not know what Oliver was doing here, where "here" was nor any of the history of this location. I didn't understand his motivations outside of impressing his father, I didn't understand how many species were involved of other characters he was talking to, I didn't understand anybody's history in relationship to each other or their respective positions with regards to this location and affecting the future?? Just wtf was anybody trying to do? There were hints of interesting or layered backgrounds for our two main characters, like Oliver with his cleanliness and a brief mention of possible past lovers? But these were never explored and I felt like the characters lacked depth. They felt very much so like stereotypical cardboard cutouts to me. The smut was fine, not memorable, it felt shoehorned and plopped in, or even as if there was a word count limit and important plot and background development was cut simply to make room for the fucking. There was definitely NOWWHERE near enough emotional development between our two characters, so even when there was somewhat of a grand gesture toward the end it felt like it came out of left field and I didn't give a shit. Overall there was just not enough non -smut content in this book for me to understand or care. I see other reviewers who claim to really enjoy the world building, but I also saw many complaints at the abrupt ending. Also comments regarding the pacing being off, but I felt that a better description was this quote "the balance of intimacy and action was not right" 💯 agree with. Another reviewer points out that all of the important high-ranking people in this book never accomplish anything, which is so true!! I only just now when writing my review saw the author's note at the end of the blurb that recommends reading number 0.5 first, despite this book being listed as the first/#1 in the series on Goodreads and also the blurb indicating that this is a standalone book...
