Guarding Temptation

Guarding Temptation

Talia Hibbert

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Protective. Obsessive. And rough around the edges. James Foster knows the rules: you don’t fall for your best friend’s little sister. Nina is too young, too reckless, and too busy saving the world to be tied down by the commitment he craves. If he was smart, he’d stop wanting her. But she’s the one thing on earth James just can’t quit. Fierce. Principled. And impossible to resist. Political campaigner Nina Chapman is sick of one-time things. She wants forever, and she wants it with her brother’s best friend—but James still sees her as a child to be coddled. So when a controversial article lands Nina in hot water, she finds herself under his protection and under his roof. It’s a shame James doesn’t want her in his bed, too. …Or does he? Warning: this red-hot novella contains one radical leftist heroine, one over-protective hero, one annoying childhood nickname, and a shared apartment with only one bed. Also, Brexit. But not too much, I promise. Please note:a version of this novella was previously published as Resisting Desire in the Rogue Nights anthology. This version has been revised and expanded to double its previous length.

I don't have the best luck with Hibbert's books and this is another one I can add to that list. I knew the trope here was brother's best friend. I adore that trope. However, If I would have known that this was also a friends to lovers romance I wouldn't have picked it up. Friends to lovers is a trope that I dislike to read about. So my rating is basically because of that.

For it to be a novella the will they or won't the felt so drawn out to me. Along with miscommunication, this just dragged for me. I never connected to either character and only cared for the smut. #sorrynotsorry

Like I said before, the trope is one I didn't like and the story seemed to drag for me. If you are a fan of her writing and enjoy friends to lovers then you might enjoy this more than I did.

I have such mixed feeling on this... I picked this up for Smutathon and overall I found that the actual romance plot of this just didn't do anything for me. I didn't really believe the chemistry between them and got really frustrated with their horrible communication. I honestly just wanted to shake these two every time the beat around the bush of the their actual feelings.

However, Talia Hibbert has an unparalleled knack for incorporating so much substance and social commentary into even the shortest romances. She somehow tackled race, politics, online bullying, privilege, etc in under 120 pages. And I absolutely loved those aspects.
