Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills — and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit — he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

One of my favorite novels ever, it was so intriguing I couldn’t put it down. It’s dramatic and tense but also hilarious. A great escape from reality

4.5 stars. This book was amazing, sucking me in from the first the chapter. Some of the math bits made my eyes glaze a little, but overall the science is written in an understandable way. And the humor! What a great read.

Listened to this book on audio on vacation with the family, and it was a hit! Everyone was pleased to have the car ride pass more quickly, and we twice chose to sit in the car an extra couple of minutes until the disk/chapter had finished!

I think the narrator did a nice job allowing the humor to come through and made Mark expressive. Perhaps he could have made the terror moments a bit more anxious though.

The author as well did a nice job describing the science and keeping things at a level for a layperson.
There was only one disc that had a scratch or two, and the car cd player wasn't up to playing it so we had to skip a couple of minutes. I think the book must have been written this way, there's no way that the 4 minutes of audio was more than a page or so, but suddenly the entries of Mark's log jumped over 100 days?? We all freaked out, thinking we had missed something big! I know that there's only so much routine that can be allowed, and I'm sure that a balance was needed where not every day could be a Mars disaster, but this time jump seemed excessive and we all wanted to know more about this period.

Enjoyed the book, plan to see the movie.
