Wild Ride Cowboy (Copper Ridge, #9)

Maisey Yates

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

He's come back to Copper Ridge, Oregon, to keep a promise—even if it means losing his heart… Putting down roots in Copper Ridge was never Alex Donnelly's intention. But if there's one thing the ex-military man knows, it's that life rarely unfolds as expected. If it did, his best friend and brother-in-arms would still be alive. And Alex wouldn't have inherited a ranch or responsibility for his late comrade's sister—a woman who, despite her inexperience, can bring tough-as-iron Alex to his knees. Clara Campbell didn't ask for a hero to ride in and fix her ranch and her life. All she wants is the one thing stubborn, honorable Alex is reluctant to give: a chance to explore their intense chemistry. But Clara has a few lessons to teach him, too…about trusting his heart and his instincts, and letting love take him on the wildest adventure of all.

I don’t know if it’s because I married a military man when I was 18 and have been surrounded by military men ever since, or if I just have a soft spot for the hidden vulnerability so many of them carry with them. As much as I could see Alex as being high-handed and even overbearing, I still loved him from the start. I understood him. Yet sometimes, throughout the story, I would even forget these vulnerabilities he had. Alex is very good at faking it…just keep smiling.

Clara, on the other hand, wore her heart on her sleeve. Even when she thought she was hiding it all so well she was pretty transparent. The only reason so many around her missed that about her is that they were too busy treating her with kid gloves. Clara definitely had some hard knocks in her short life. It gave her an odd mix of childishness (the girl seriously needs to update her diet!) and maturity. Sometimes defenseless, sometimes hard-ass. Of course she would intrigue Alex.

I enjoyed watching the Donnelly brothers get closer and closer through these stories. They’re learning how to be a family although they were never shown what a real family is. It’s touching to read about and I can’t get enough.

As I said earlier, I would even forget Alex’s abandonment issues sometimes. So when they’d pop back up he would gut me. And he would wiggle even further under my skin. This story had so much pain, but so much healing along with that.

This is a great story and as I'm writing this I notice that the cover actually depicts a scene in the book (a great scene), what a nice touch.

Maisey Yates has woven a heart warming story featuring the old tale of an innocent virgin and a rugged older man who is dealing with some issues. The characters are both strongly written so it's easy to imagine them as real people dealing with real problems. If you haven't read any Yates novels, this is a great place to start. You won't be disappointed.
