A little bit naughty, but oh so nice! This book has a way of walking the thin line between the two.
Grouchy Heathcliff is everyone’s idea of a Christmas Grinch, and his friends would agree to some extent. But when a crime occurs in his Nevermore Bookshop, the evidence is stacked against him. And once the town calls for his head, in the spirit of Christmas, Mina will do whatever she can to prove Heathcliff has a heart of gold under his rough exterior. Even if she herself has her own doubts to his innocence. With the help of Mina’s other two boyfriends, Quoth and Morrie, they will do their best to help solve the mystery.
First, I love the parody that is played with “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. It’s one of my favorites to watch and read during the Holidays. This retelling-like version is done with some famous fictional characters which added a ‘who dun it’ mystery feel. I would say I am easily hooked to this book and author!
The characters are fun and play true to the aesthetic of the original fictional characters. And not only that, but the story itself had such great rhythm as you read it. Steffanie has a voice in her writing and a style that easily makes me want to return to her world. She is a great story teller in the way she has the characters interact with one another. And my favorite – the way she throws a shout out to herself in the book. I loved it!
Storyline wise, it gives a nod to the Dr. Seuss’ classic with a bit more of a murky-darkness element to it that I enjoy. It also has a steamy-smutty scene to kick off the whole race against the clock. The smut puts this book on my naughty list, but the sweet Holiday messages in this book clearly give it a spot on my nice list too.
After reading this book, I will easily be returning to Steffanie’s world she created to read the whole Nevermore Bookstore series. Not only that, but she has become one of my favorite authors this year. With lovable characters and a plot with love and mystery attached in a Christmas season setting, this book gets 5 phases from me! Can’t wait to dive into more from this wonderful author!
I am really enjoying this series.
Every book in the series is a different murder. And while this one didn't have a murder it still had a mystery.
It's a quick read, and very fun. I was a bit mad at Mina for a bit in this story, but I guess on some level I understood where she was coming from.
Go grab this series, they are fun quick reads with a bit of reverse harem added for you to enjoy!
