The Widow

K.L. Slater

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

My husband was not a monster. No matter what they say… The day my husband, Michael, stepped in front of a lorry after being questioned by the police, my world fell apart. He was devoted to me and our six-year-old daughter. But they’d connected him to the disappearance of a young mother from our tiny village. Now I stand at Michael’s funeral, clutching my little girl’s hand, with tears in my eyes as I insist to all our friends that he died an innocent man. Yet the questions have started, and nothing I say will stop them digging for the truth. But none of them can read the secrets in my heart, or know about the phone I found hidden in his toolbox… I’m determined that my daughter will not remember her father as a monster. I will erase any hint of wrongdoing in this house whatever the cost. Because to keep my daughter safe, the last thing I need is for people to start looking at me…

The story follows a mystery in Lynwick, Nottinghamshire. Suzy Baros, a Polish immigrant goes missing without a trace during a community event and no one knows where she disappeared off to, not even her young son. Not soon after, police suspect Michael Shaw, someone who worked with Suzy up until her disappearance. Kate, Michael's wife cannot come to terms with a loving and devoted father like Michael himself could commit a crime. However, when Michael is killed in a lorry accident, seemingly having jumped in its way, Kate is forced to ask herself what might've prompted Michael to do this? Is he really responsible for Suzy's disappearance?

Although it was a slow start at first, the author unfolds the story bit by bit, really giving the reader with just enough information to suspect multiple people. The author challenges the reader, giving us characters who are morally grey and spinning a tale so rich in detail, it's impossible to pin the crime on just one person.

The twists were few, but it did pack a punch. My prediction was way off and the unpredictable nature of this book simply made it unputdownable. I finished the second half of the book within a night because I just had to know the end. It was that good.

Overall, a great read that compels you to hold on until the nailbiting finish! Thank you to Bookoture and Netgalley for allowing me to read an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Another Audio book finished! This one definitely had a dark twist ending that I was not expecting! The only reason this book isn't higher than a 3 star is because it took me well over half the book to be truly invested. The reader of this book sounded very robotic in the first quarter of the book and I kept getting distracted wondering if it was a real person reading or a robot. But as the book continued things seemed to flow a lot better. I felt most the characters were well developed and a few could have been detailed a bit more. Overall a good free read!
