This book had emotional depth. Lyla Sage seems to always bring some type of mental health flavor to her MCs and this one was focused on how easy it is to run from discomfort. Both characters spent time isolating from truths about themselves until they had rock bottom moments of not recognizing themselves anymore. Now they’re both on a journey to reengage with the world and what makes them feel happy and fulfilled, meeting each other along the way.
I’ve never read about a pepper spray meet cute! It was hilarious and immediately hooked me.
I feel like Sage kind of lost her way, story wise, about 50% into the book. Emotionally, in the conversations between Collins and Brady, the story was awesome. I loved it. The actual wheels of it all though: the developer, the fight with Clarke, the storm, the strange ghost outings when she was supposed to be helping Brady acclimate to town— all of that was weird, disconnected, and didn’t engage me. That side of the book, while interesting, felt boring. The humor slowly left as well. Which sucks, cause when I realized Sage was writing a book about a girl who can see ghosts instead of another Cowboy Romance- I was so excited.

Opinion: I do not want or need a Christmas/Holiday series. I’ve read two in a row now that apparently are part of/are going to be a series, but I’m really just looking for quick, festive, standalone stories atm. so I have no plans on reading any further than the first. The problem is that when there’s more books they never wrap the endings up nicely so I’m always left wanting!

I'm thinking of doing another 12 books from 12 friends challenge next year and would love some recs if you have any to give! I specifically want to try and work through my unread physical TBR so if you'd like to take a peek at my TBR and suggest something, that would be much appreciated 😁

I think these types of stories are important and remind us how far we have come yet how some things never change. There are some trigger warnings for this book and I almost set this book down, to pick up at another point in time, because it has some very depressing plot points. It was well written and the narrator for this book was perfect.

It’s wild how many crimes ppl were able to get away with simply because the evidence required for all of them was a single witness. I’m glad physical evidence and DNA is a thing now bc sheeeeesh
