This book had as much depth as I expected based on so many raving reviews. The characters were well rounded and I was invested in both the modern day and flash back narratives. At no point did I know what happened with Shane and Eva in the past or what their future would look like. I really didn't see the ending coming either.
I'm not a big literary fiction fan but I am glad I took a chance on this book and read something outside of my norm. I would definitely recommend this book to friends who enjoy literary fictions, complex relationships, and dualling timelines.

This was such a good literary fiction book. I want all of my friends to read this book ASAP so they can feel the emotions that I did.
A story of women breaking into a male dominated field will always have me in a choke hold and this one was no different. The characters were all so well written and had such depth. I was so invested in the story line and everyone's lives the whole time. As a big sister and a woman in a male dominated field, I saw so many of my own characteristics and mannerisms in Joan and her relationship with her family. I adored her niece at every age and loved the relationships that Joan was building in her life with NASA.
I have not been so wrecked by an ending of a book, as I was with this one. I mean tears streaming down my face as I was listening and I was held captive until the very last second of this book. If you haven't read this one yet, add it to your TBR ASAP.

Wow. Just wow. That's all I could think when I finished this book. No wonder it has such high ratings and so many people recommending it.
I picked this book up around the holidays and ended up putting it down at about the 7% mark because I just wasn't in the right space to read a high fantasy book. I am so so glad I picked it back up. The world building was so well done, the magic system is so interesting and different from other fantasy books I've read. I felt like the pacing was really well done. Shockingly, at like the 15% mark I was hooked and that doesn't typically happen until the 30-45% in high fantasy books.
Vis was such an entertaining and lovable character. You want to cheer him on from the very beginning and his moral compass is very respectable in a society built on greed. The relationships he builds, the bridges he burns, and how his brain works to solve puzzles and problems are so incredible.
I had such a good time reading this book and being apart of this world and I have immediately dived into the next book! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a high fantasy book (with little to no romance), school based game style books, or main characters who you develop the softest spots for!

I think I expected so much more with this book based on its popularity. It was not a bad read but it definitely could have been better and better written. The plot was okay. It was engaging especially at the end. All in all, it's a 3 for me.

This book was a challenging read. Not in the sense that the topics were hard to follow or that the author had a poor writing style. This book was a challenge in all the thoughts and questions that it brings up about life and death and what you want for yourself and your parents when it comes to the years when you/they can't live on their own and how care for yourself/them will look. There is no right answer and that's what makes it so challenging too.
As someone who is fortunate to still have both sets of my grandparents alive and living on their own still, I have requested that my own mother read this book to be better prepared to support her own parents when that time comes. This is a book that I will think about every time we have a conversation about what growing older looks like for my grandparents, my parents and myself.
This is honestly a book that I think everyone should read. I think it will make a lot of people uncomfortable, because no one likes to think about death, but in the end I think the conversations that this book prompts are so so important.
