Well honestly it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting based off all the comments on the forum. I’m not new to the romantasy genre but I am the type of reader who is usually just along for the ride with the main character. The only books I try to string theories together on are Sanderson’s books. So keep that in mind as I review. I thought this was a fun quick read. Is it the best romantasy book out there? No. Were there some world building holes? Yes. Did I have fun while going through this story and even laugh out loud at times? Also yes. It had a fun vibe for me and was honestly what I needed to get me out of my fantasy slump I’d been in. It’s been years and years since I read the Divergent series but it was super reminiscent of that but just more “mature.” I think this author is new to the fantasy world and has a lot of learning to do but it was fast paced enough for me to be able to push through and enjoy. I do really hope that the next book goes more in depth into how the world got to where it did and how mods vs primes began. Overall I’ll probably read the next book but I don’t think I’ll reread this book when it comes out. I’d recommend this book if you enjoyed the Fourth Wing or Divergent series, are just here to vibe and not think too deeply, and don’t mind that the world building isn’t that deep.

a great start to complex politics, family dynamics and expectations, culture and heritage, tradition, and circling back to our roots. much of the story is about building the ground of Kekon and the rivalry between the No Peak and Mountain clans. while certain parts of character development and the "high-stakes" energy felt a bit flat at times, the family dynamic and my curiosity on the Kaul family brought me back each time. if you enjoy politically-focused stories that have far reaching implications based off real, historical context set in an mafia-esque East Asian urban fantasy, Jade City is solid foundation to an intriguing trilogy.

It’s giving Divergent and I just don’t know how I feel about it overall. I’m not a big fan of books with military type plots but I get this is more dystopian and there are special abilities involved. I’m intrigued and will probably continue to read it

Jayde Valence? Right hand to the commander? Come on and tell me this character has no relation to JD Vance. To think I was starting to question if this book was written by a conservative!
