Recs if you like Memoirs of Hadrian...

Based on the list/book published in 2006, general editor Peter Boxall.

This list comprises numerous French classics, from romantic epics, to realist critiques of society, to philosophical fiction, to scandalous stories, poetry, & more! I’ll be updating it sporadically.

A collection of acclaimed classic and contemporary Francophone literature. I chose to classify as Francophone rather than French in order to include authors who wrote in French but were/are not of French nationality, especially authors from colonised countries. Non-exhaustive as I'm not an expert I am keeping this list to one book per author but suggestions very welcome! :)

Elena Ferrante, the bestselling pseudonymous Italian author behind My Brilliant Friend, has named her favourite 40 books by female authors around the world.

French classics that are not 1500 pages long and written 200 years ago. They are accessible, modern and relevant ! In summary, this is a list of French books of the XX c. and XXI c. of less than 400 pages. (Except The Second Sex but it is too culturally important not to put it in a list like that...)

(This list is purely based on what I know and have read. Feel free to suggest new books to add.)

The female writers the canon has “forgotten” about (or wilfully ignored / pushed out / side tracked)

Enjoy my newest lit series, ‘Reading the World’, in an attempt to diversify your own reading and broaden horizons, I have included a mix of genres. Sensitive topics often lie ahead as history, social and political issues are usually the centre of this writing. Enjoy!

Or: books I had or still have to read for my degree

I'm going to Paris and this is my curriculum

A collection of Greek, Sumerian, and Roman myth retellings and historical fiction. There are the perennial favorites and perhaps a few that deserve some time in the limelight.

Books set in the Roman Empire (800 BC - 400 CE)

"Do from within, the same work of reconstruction which the nineteenth-century archaeologists have done from without" -- MOH, pg. 273. Old classics for the new world, new classics for the oldest world we dare to endure with human hope upon. Undeniably timeless literature.
