Rhage (Monsters of Metal, #1)

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Some monsters choose to hide in the spotlight. I never considered myself a groupie until I discovered Rhage, a masked metal band that's quickly taking over the rock music scene. Now, the lead singer, Sebastian Alex, is all I can think about. When I get the chance to meet him backstage at a concert, I don't expect to catch his attention, but that's exactly what happens. He notices me, and doesn't let me out of his sight. As excited as I am, I'm also terrified. There's something dark and mysterious lurking beneath the mask he wears for the world, something sinister and dangerous that he's hiding. Is unveiling his secret worth risking my life, or is the mystery better left unsolved?

This book is about a woman who's obsessed with a band and enters a contest to make a mask and get backstage to meet them. She doesn't win, but her friend gets her tickets anyway and she lucks into a backstage pass. Once she gets back stage, she catches the eye of the main singer. The band is made up of energy-sucking demons, and the lead singer is obsessed with her particular kind of energy.

So, it's not bad. It reads kind of like fanfiction. The monster-rockstar concept was really cool, I liked that a lot. But the mask thing is a pointless plot line (literally nothing would have been different about the story if that whole part was left out). I didn't really connect with any of the characters (except the best friend side character a little) and when they finally did have sex, it was almost the end of the book and I didn't really care. I'd call it a slow burn, but it was more like pointless staving off the inevitable for the drama--except the drama was barely a conflict.

For the trigger warnings in the beginning, I was expecting a lot more.
