upcoming horror in 2026 ๐ฉธโฅโ.หโ
was curious, so did some research and found loads and loads!!! happy reading, folks!

Japanese crime novels
my favourite genre, these books are so much fun and more and more are being added all the time If anyone has any questions about any book I will try to help. I have read most of them and have reference books on the history of Japanese crime fiction.

2026 Horror Releases
A genre-inclusive and diverse list of horror releases coming in 2026. If I missed any or you have suggestions, please let me know. I will update periodically as new books are announced and release dates are solidified.
Source for a lot of the data for this list came from readjumpscares.com, which is a website you should absolutely check out. Iโm sure data will come from other places along the way, as well.

Ergodic & Odd Formatting Strictly- (W/ NOTES by me)๐ ๐
Iโve seen lists, but not one strictly about Ergodic/odd formatting where itโs vital to read the e/physical because of the formatting and/or text โnon inclusive of illustrated versions, and just adding non-vital images, etc.
These are the books where if you donโt read the physical (maybe the ebook) youโre MISSING something VITAL to the experience.
I often read audiobooks and donโt know Iโm missing out ๐ซ
PLS recommend W/ explanation (& avoid spoilers) & feel free to argue cases!!
Examples & notes in comments!!!

Unconventional Japanese murder mysteries
While my first list is great ( Japanese crime novels.)!! Itโs very long and I want to highlight the weird and unconventional murder mysteries that Japan produces. With weird settings, formats and or supernatural elements. Plus looking at future releases there is a few more coming out at the end of the year which I will add closer to the date.
I found zombie apocalypse murder mystery!

Mysteries and Thrillers
This includes book that have either mystery or thrillers as a primary or secondary genre. If you have recommendations to add please comment and I'll happily add them ๐

Not all of these books will have cannibalism... but there is a non-zero chance at least 1% will.

Shifting Death Maze
Books that include the theme of maze-like houses, interiors, and some actual mazes. Usually horror, not always.

ergodic lit and other odd books
"ergodic literature is a mode of textual organization in which nontrivial effort is required for the reader to traverse the text, beyond ordinary eye movement or turning pages." - espen j. aarseth
books with unique formatting, books you can play like a game, books you need to take apart and put back together again, stories-within-stories, books containing found documents and ephemera, etc.

Books by Content Creator Authors
Books by authors who also have some followings on Youtube, Instagram, TikTok etc

Ergodic Novels

Haunted houses
Books where the home is a character or where the home is the problem. Youโll get the vibe.

The Strange Series by Uketsu
This series has 3 books (4th yet to be translated). Uketsu, a japanese thriller writer, provides 3 fast paced, thriller stories with very good images to refer. It's a type of a honkaku, for readers to solve. Let me know how you guys felt about this series! I will update once the 4th book comes out ( expect july 2026)
( Note: Ignore the manga and the japanese version of the books as pagebound allows a minimum of 5 boos, mark them as completed once the 3 English books are completed)
