Memorials

Richard Chizmar

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

A group of students encounter a supernatural terror while on a road trip through Appalachia in this chilling new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of the “unforgettable and scary” (Harlan Coben) Chasing the Boogeyman. 1983: Three students from a small college embark on a week-long road trip to film a documentary on roadside memorials for their American Studies class. The project starts out as a fun adventure with long stretches of empty road and nightly campfires where they begin to open up with one another. But as they venture deeper into the Appalachian backwoods, the atmosphere begins to darken. They notice more and more of the memorials feature a strange, unsettling symbol hinting at a sinister secret. Paranoia sets in when it appears they are being followed. Their vehicle is tampered with overnight and some of the locals appear to be anything but welcoming. Before long, the students can’t help but wonder if these roadside deaths were really random accidents…or is something terrifying at work here?

    This book was so bad.

If I didn’t feel obliged to finish every book I pick up, this would have been a DNF at page 20. The dialogue was horrible, unrealistic and cringey. this did not feel written by “New York Times Bestselling Author. Also, Stephen King gave this a glowing review- I cannot even comprehend why.

The character building was also BAD, instead of allowing the reader to get to know the characters in a meaningful, natural way- it was just laid out, in what felt like a long, run-on sentence.

Also, the storyline itself was pretty atrocious. I felt that random things were tossed into the story to move it along. Nothing felt cohesive whatsoever. After I realized it wasn’t getting any better, I just hated read the rest of this book, so so so so bad.

I cannot understand why anyone would give this book more than MAYBE a two star rating. Truly one of the worst books I have ever read. Please don’t read this, save 6 hours of your life. This was a waste of 500 pages worth of tree.

Thats it for my scathing review, it was truly bad. Please don’t read it
