mostly thrillers, all books i stayed up way too late to read. these aren’t necessarily literature, just books that hook.

Formerly the James Tiptree, Jr. Literary Award: "an annual literary prize for science fiction or fantasy that expands or explores our understanding of gender... The aim of the award is to seek out work that is thought-provoking, imaginative, and perhaps even infuriating." (from the website)

Annual award winners listed chronologically back to the award's origin in 1991; some standalone stories aren't (yet?) available to be included. Note that some years have multiple winners.

Tired of worlds in books that seem too grounded in reality? This is the list for you! It features speculative fiction (fantasy, sci fi, horror) and new weird books with worlds that are extremely different from anything found on earth. Only the first book in a series is included. I have not read most of the books on this list, so comment if you think a book doesn’t fit the spirit of the list. I’m also always open to suggestions for books to add!

These post-apocalyptic stories examine our current world despite being set after (or sometimes during) the collapse of society. Whether it be critiquing government systems, power dynamics, the flaws and strengths of humans, environmental changes, these stories all have something to explore.
