Eleven-year-old Tony Weaver, Jr. loves comic books, anime, and video games, and idolizes the heroic, larger-than-life characters he finds there. But his new classmates all think he’s a weirdo. Lots of graphic novels handle tough subjects. This one is different in the most spectacular way. I felt seen on a guttural level, making me have to read the first half of the book in smaller chunks. I wish this kind of literature was available when I was a kid, I can’t imagine how different I would have felt. If you read one graphic novel this year, make it this one.
