The Couples Trip is about a hiking trip that takes MULTIPLE turns for the worse. Two couples set out together on an annual hiking trip that goes horribly wrong. The hike soon spirals into chaos when the three friends come to realize that bringing a new person was a decision that could change their lives forever. This book had so much potential for me. After reading the synopsis, I was eager to start; I like nothing more than an “addictive psychological thriller.” However, I was also intrigued by the setting. I was looking forward to reading about the beautiful scenery of the mountaintops of northern Sweden while utter chaos takes place in the forefront. Initially, I was hooked; the characters caught my interest, and I was excited to see how the story played out. Being lost in the wilderness, in a location where weather is subject to change at a moment’s notice, is anxious-inducing enough, but throwing in an individual you don’t know and who has a temper would send me into a downward spiral. Even though I was not in this situation and was only reading about it, I was still on the edge of my seat, and that’s where I stayed, but only for a short period of time. I thought Anna was a strong main character, and she had my attention for the entirety of the story; however, I wasn’t as connected to the other characters, and there wasn’t too much going on to hold my attention. The story started to feel too long, and even though the descriptions of the landscape provided for perfect imagery inside my little head, it started to become too much, just because I already felt the story was too long. Once the story progressed to the ending, it got exciting again, and I was really into it. We get some more details that you kind of have a feeling you know, but it’s confirmed, and then it ends, and the ending was a bit underwhelming. This is the first book I’ve read from this author, so I am most likely going to try another one of his books to see if he is someone I want to keep an eye on or if his writing just isn’t for me.
