"The Husky and His White Cat Shizun" Mo Ran felt that taking Chu Wanning as his master was a mistake. His Shizun was just so similar to a cat, while he was like a silly dog. Dogs and cats were biologically different. The silly dog hadn’t originally intended to put his furry paws out towards that cat. He originally thought that dogs should be with dogs, like his senior brother, who was beautiful and docile, like a cute Japanese Spitz. They would look so good together. But after dying and coming back to life, after living two lifetimes, the one he’d brought back to his den both times was that snow-white kitty Shizun that he didn’t even have his eye on at first.

[UPDATE] this is an update over a month after finishing reading the book and reviewing it. i've thought about mo ran and chu wanning literally every day ever since, and i don't think it's fair for me to keep it with the rest of my four-stars books when they aren't the same.
just to be clear, my overall rating for it is 4.5 (like i put it up before), because some of the points i made last time still stand, but i'll overlook the rest. i love this so much and i can't stop thinking about it.
[PREVIOUS REVIEW] WHAT. A. RIDE. not for the weak hearted (or the ones who can't handle problematic content), this has definitely been the biggest book i've ever read and i honestly didn't think it'd finish it as fast as i did. there were many times when i wondered whether i would be able to make it, because don't let the cover and the name fool you, this isn't a story about sweetness and good feelings. i did end up falling in love with it, though. with many aspects of it, in fact. but most of it is due to the main characters, mo ran and chu wanning.
seeing chu wanning is my favorite character and i love mo ran so much, i could talk about them for a loooong time, but all i'm going to say is i truly feel so proud of them. it's lovely seeing characters grow with each other and the romance kept my heart warm at so many times. i cried for them, laughed for them. i really love them. (i would also like to mention my two other favorite characters, xue meng and ye wangxi. i love them very much too).
i did think about giving this 4.5 stars before, but i couldn't bring myself to do it, simply because i think there were many graphic scenes that were unnecessary. i understand i signed up for it when i read the trigger warnings, but there are things that can be avoided, and they weren't here. that's a complaint i must speak of, because it did make me uncomfortable.
finally, the part i like the most about this novel is the way we're constantly reminded that people make mistakes, people waver between good and bad feelings, people change, and on it goes. we can't expect to judge these characters for everything they do, whether it is good or bad. and the plot twists (and constant moments where i saw everything i believed in this story being completely turned upside down) made that point even more valid. it's a great read, heavy as it might be, and i'm glad i persisted until the end.
