The road to power... is paved with blood and magic. Cleo is now a prisoner in her own palace, forced to be an ambassador for Mytica as the evil King Gaius lies to her people. Magnus stands to eventually inherit the new kingdom but is still obsessed with his feelings for his adopted sister, Lucia. Lucia is haunted by the outcome of the breathtaking display of magic that allowed her father to capture the kingdoms. Jonas watched at the palace gates a troop of rebels behind him, waiting for him to tell them how he plans to overtake King Gaius. After a bloody siege, Auranos has been defeated, its young queen orphaned and dethroned. The three kingdoms—Auranos, Limeros, and Paelsia—are now unwillingly united as one country called Mytica. But the allure of ancient, dangerous magic beckons still, and with it the chance to rule not just Mytica, but the whole world over... At the heart of the fray are four brave young people grappling for that magic and the power it promises. For Cleo, the magic would enable her to reclaim her royal seat. In Jonas's hands, it frees his nation, and in Lucia's, it fulfills the ancient prophecy of her destiny. And if the magic were Magnus's, he would finally prove his worth in the eyes of his cruel and scheming father, King Gaius, who rules Mytica with a punishing hand. When Gaius begins to build a road into the Forbidden Mountains to physically link all of Mytica, he sparks a long-smoking fire in the hearts of the people that will forever change the face of this land. For Gaius's road is paved with blood, and its construction will have cosmic consequences.

The ending was a little anti-climactic but YO THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD I AM OBSESSED I LOVED IT SO MUCH.

It was perfect. Like truly perfect. (Okay, it wasn't perfect, but you know.)

Do I think this had the most original plot, characters, etc. etc. Maybe not. But that doesn't really matter to me. This book kept me thoroughly entertained from start to end. There was not a single minute in the audiobook where I was bored or wishing something would happen. I was interested in all the action, all the dialogue, all the mystery, all of it.

Normally I don't like books that break the established POV pattern. For example, Falling Kingdoms only had four POVs: Jonas, Cleo, Magnus, and Lucia (oh, and the watcher, if I remember correctly). This one had mostly those four, with the occasional other one thrown in: Nic, Althea, Gaius, Lysandra. But for some reason I didn't mind it so much. I think because this book has so many characters (but not TOO many). I found I was kind of interested when Nic's POV was thrown in. (Def VERY intrigued by how his POV chapter ended...)

It was also so realistic in a lot of ways. I hate YA books that describe characters as "ruthless assassins" yet they never assassinate anyone ruthlessly? Or when these stupid sixteen year olds from the farm somehow outsmart people who have made their career out of military strategy?

People were dying left and right. I couldn't believe it!! King Gaius is cold and unfeeling? He actually acts cold and unfeeling. Jonas keeps coming up with all these plans—some work, some don't. He's not perfect, which I LOVE.

I genuinely was squealing, dropping my jaw in shock, getting animatedly excited while reading this book. It was SUCH a joy to read, especially after Falling Kingdoms was a bit of a disappointment. I'm shocked at how much I loved this, and I'm SO excited to start Gathering Darkness, and I hope it's as good as this one was! No second book slump here!!
