Jack Sparks died while writing this book. It was no secret that journalist Jack Sparks had been researching the occult for his new book. No stranger to controversy, he'd already triggered a furious Twitter storm by mocking an exorcism he witnessed. Then there was that video: forty seconds of chilling footage that Jack repeatedly claimed was not of his making, yet was posted from his own YouTube account. Nobody knew what happened to Jack in the days that followed - until now.

I feel like maybe I didn't get the same book as everyone else did? That has to be why so many people say this book is sooooo scary and sooooo funny when it clearly wasn't. It's the only explanation. Of course it is written in first person which is super popular right now but super difficult to do well. This book is a great example of how not to write first person novels. Shockingly, I made it halfway through Chapter 8 before I gave up on this book.

The premise sounded pretty interesting, and the idea of it playing out on social media was fresh and seemed fitting for the times, but it just didn't work. The reading of YouTube comments and the please comment and subscribe just made me want to gouge my eyes out.

Oh, and the scary parts that I made it through (exorcism and YouTube video) were not even close to scary. I've read so many reviews saying how scary the exorcism was. Uh...WHAT?!? So scary it practically put me to sleep. Apparently there is some amazing scene towards the end of the book but there are too many good books and too many trashy good books I want to read that I can't justify wasting any more of my time on this to get one good scene.

Another thing: the characters were all horrible. Not good horrible where the character is a piece of garbage but you still like the character because they are well written, just plain old "if I have to read one more page of this dialogue I will, again, gouge my eyes out" horrible.

If I had one wish right now it would be to get the money back I spent on this book.
