This story was a lot of fun, as well as having a lot of really heartfelt moments. There’s nothing like the bond people get when they serve in the military together. From the moment Gunner met Sidney he was impressed by her and found her the most attractive person he had ever met. But he quickly put her in the friend zone because, overseas in a dangerous and war-torn country, it was much more valuable to him and Sidney to have a friend they could rely on no matter what. Gunner knew throwing any sort of intimate relationship into the mix could really screw that up and throw one or both of them off their game. He never let on about his feelings, so Sid assumed she would never have a chance of having any sort of relationship with him other than best friends so she stuck with that. Their arrangement worked…until it didn’t.
While Gunner locked his feelings down super deep and became a sort of ladies man to overcompensate, Sid never truly buried her feelings from herself. Sid was wounded badly while in the field and was medically discharged from the military, so Gunner got out himself and decided to pursue the dream they used to talk about of rescuing dogs. He, of course, invited Sid to join him and they even moved in together. Again, as friends. But Sid just cannot take Gunner’s revolving door any longer. She realizes she either needs to step up her game and get Gunner to open his eyes to how great they would be together, or move out and move on.
Antics ensue and feelings are brought to the forefront. The first kiss Sidney and Gunner share is explosive and gave me all sorts of butterflies. But one kiss does not a relationship make. Eventually things work out and the happy couple is together. Yet Sidney is uneasy, feeling she tricked Gunner into their relationship and knowing he hates lies. She just can’t seem to find the right way to tell him the true story of how they came to be.
As much as I thoroughly enjoy these two and their chemistry, I wasn’t all that impressed with Gunner’s reaction when the truth came out. You all know I’m not a fan of the “big lie” trope, but in this case I truly thought Sid was making it out to be bigger than it really was. Instead of being annoyed with her for hiding her “lie”, I was annoyed with Gunner for reacting poorly because his ego was hurt. Of course, calmer heads eventually prevail and we get the HEA we all want to see.
There are so many stories I am waiting to see play out in this branch of the Love in Bloom series. Like I said before, I like the Wickeds almost as much as I love the Whiskeys.
