I discovered Angela Carter in Novemver of 2024 and after absolutely falling head over heels for one of her short stories in a Literary Critisism class - Company of Wolves - vowed to read as many of her books as I could in 2025. With college work I only read 3 in 2025, and now we are coming into 2026 and I have compiled several of her books, but have yet to read them! This is my personal quest list to encourage me to. This is the ultimate list of shortform horror you would not read nowadays to your kid, of modern day novels with fairytale vibes, AND of literary classics that ingulge in innocent heroines, triple tasks and a bit o' incest. Get all your red painted roses, deep dark woodland paths, gingerbread cannibals houses, feminine rage and sentient objects right here. Don't forget to leave your reccs in the comments!

Dramatic fiction of all genres that feature large amounts of the characters just sitting around and thinking😂 The "boring" books that are super engaging if you prefer people over plot. Extra credit if they feature moral dialemmas and the characters spiraling out of control!

Lies of P is my favorite video game and I was on the hunt for reads that were similar! There's a few YA sprinkled in here, but I tried to avoid it for the most part. There is one comic here that's for pre-teens... but it fit so perfectly! There's a surprising lack of Pinocchio inspired horror books... 😔 Feel free to drop recommendations! 🧚‍♀️

Retellings, expansions, and character studies inspired by Carlo Collodi's beloved puppet tale! I'm including the original Pinocchio that is a new translation published by Penguin Classics (14 Sept. 2021 • ISBN 9780143136095). It's annotated by the translators and is super informative! A great addition to this list!
