The shocking thing about the girls was how nearly normal they seemed when their mother let them out for the one and only date of their lives. Twenty years on, their enigmatic personalities are embalmed in the memories of the boys who worshipped them and who now recall their shared adolescence: the brassiere draped over a crucifix belonging to the promiscuous Lux; the sisters' breathtaking appearance on the night of the dance; and the sultry, sleepy street across which they watched a family disintegrate and fragile lives disappear.

I actually didn't quite finish this book~ it made me too uncomfortable. I think the author's intention for the whole thing to read as creepy and voyeuristic, and I could not shake that vibe. I watched the movie also with my book club, and it was also odd, though the ADD voyeurism part didn't quite come across as strong.
That was the other part I wasn't a fan of: the narrator(s) was/were constantly putting in little asides and would interrupt the story with an anecdote or side message, and I felt that it was disruptive more than informative. These were often quite long, breaking the flow of the storyline and many times these were the demonstrations of very high levels of creepy-ness.
I may return to finish this novel some day, but I wasn't a fan of the style, nor the overall story in general.
