Four Quartets

Four Quartets

T.S. Eliot

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Four Quartets is the culminating achievement of T.S. Eliot's career as a poet. While containing some of the most musical and unforgettable passages in twentieth-century poetry, its four parts, 'Burnt Norton', 'East Coker', 'The Dry Salvages' and 'Little Gidding', present a rigorous meditation on the spiritual, philosophical and personal themes which preoccupied the author. It was the way in which a private voice was heard to speak for the concerns of an entire generation, in the midst of war and doubt, that confirmed it as an enduring masterpiece.

“We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.”

I’ll be the first to admit that this is not a casual fun read. I read it as part of my Well Read Moms Book Club and I picked it up so many times and read the first few lines and got too intimidated to read further. Finally on the day of the book club I listened to it on spotify with some atmopheric soundscape and the background and I really enjoyed it. Did I understand it? Not even a little bit. But it was beautiful to listen to. Later at book club we were all discussing a similar experience of not really understanding much of it, but we all had a few lines here and there that stood out. I really want to revisit this book later in life when my mind is not filled with keeping a baby and toddler alive.

Read if you want some depth or just some really pretty poetry.
