'The Hallowed Hunt' is a fantasy novel and a romance novel. Most importantly, it's a thrilling novel. It captured my imagination right away, and kept me engaged through its 400+ paperback pages.
I know Lois McMaster Bujold, one of my favorite writers, through her science fiction work (The Vorkosigan novels are not to be missed.). This was my first fantasy novel of hers, and I was struck by her easy exposition of the lore and magic of her world. This is an authorix who can sketch a fully-formed character with just a few sentences, and create a universe with just a few sentences more. I follow Bujold here on Goodreads, and I see that she reads a lot of romance novels - a genre with which I'm unfamiliar. Once I started looking, however, I saw that 'The Hallowed Hunt' is every bit as much a romance between its two leads as it is a kingdom-saving fantasy adventure. It has the meet, the resistance, the plunge into love, the unity. I even cried at the end.
So, Ms. Bujold isn't just a renowned and multiple award-winning science fiction mistress. She's a mistress of multiple genres, able to craft engaging tales that appeal to a wide audience. What's next? A western? A spy novel? Whatever she writes, I'll be happy to read it.
