Recs if you like His Face Is the Sun...

Representations of the Black experience through fantasy, science fiction, and speculative fiction. Recommendations welcome!

My favourite books or from my TBR by BIPOC authors in a range of different genres (though I primarily read fantasy and romance) (only first book for a series added, unless not directly linked)

Fantasy, Romantasy, Science Fiction, and Speculative Fiction books written by authors of the diaspora

Mostly fiction inspired by Sumerian, Akkadian, Egyptian, Canaanite (and Roman Levant), Hittite, Persian etc…

I see a lot of Greek myth retellings or books inspired by them, but not that much from SWANA.

The period spans from 8th millennium BCE to 7th century BCE. This is very much unique to Sumerian culture. But there aren’t a lot of Sumerian inspired works out there. And since, we’re bound by the constraints of what’s available, I’ve been lax with the criteria.

(Different genres)

This list is for fiction novels steeped in ancient Egyptian history and/or mythology. It is a work in progress. If you have any recommendations for this list, please provide the titles and authors in the comments, and I will be happy to add them. 😊

For the Fae and Flame Society book club, often our spring book bingo includes a square for 'Myth Retellings.' Here is a list of books as such!

I love YA. It can suck pretty bad when the books try to copy each other. But when some of those gems pop up...wowza! Who knew you could tell such a hard-hitting story without having to resort to 1,000 pages & sex?

Fantasy inspired by history or mythology set in a secondary world (more loosely inspired historical fantasy)
