Recs if you like The Summer I Ate the Rich...

Representations of the Black experience through fantasy, science fiction, and speculative fiction. Recommendations welcome!

horror fiction from Black authors featuring Black characters

books where women eat or think about eating other people

weird girl books with a Black woman protagonist! recommendations very welcome, hoping to spotlight some lesser known titles!

in the first edition of ‘the monstrous-feminine’, barbara creed challenges the dominant representation of women in horror films as victims, arguing that patriarchal ideology constructs women as monstrous because of their sexuality (or lack thereof).

later, creed reinterprets the monstrous-feminine as a being who embraces her body and reclaims her otherness. in line with this contemporary vision, these are books which use horror to redefine notions of ‘womanhood’.

recommendations welcome!

For the girlies that like their horror with a side of glitter!

all things summer and horror from slashers to summer camp and your favorite local faire.

these books include themes of class relations and cannibalism. sometimes the rich eat you, sometimes you eat the rich.

horror novels written by women about girls and women with deadly appetites. despite the title there is sapphic lit here i just liked the pun. these books focus on human cannibals, i.e. not supernatural monsters like vampires, werewolves, etc. is the cannibalism a metaphor for love? rage? sex? all of the above!

as comprehensive a guide to ya horror as i can make it! work in progress, suggestions welcome ♡

books where chefs, caterers, restauranteurs, critics, and connoisseurs do cannibalism, or where a prominent theme of the book is food/cooking

Horror stories focusing on female characters who commit acts of violence rather than being the victims.

Crime, obsession, feminine rage etc 🩷

inspired by both shanspeare’s video essay on the topic and also by my sheer adoration of this niche genre of books! vampires and other monsters are also included in this category.

Books where over-indulgence and over-consumption are central themes.

I’m really fascinated by cover trends in publishing and this one has felt inescapable this year so I decided to make a list of them all! I feel like I personally see this most often in horror & lit fic, but I’d love to hear if you’ve seen this trend outside those genres or if there’s another trend you see!
